“An open hearing is absolutely imperative,” Speier said, adding that sexual misconduct in the armed forces has been a “cancer” growing for 25 years. “Congress historically has done a hearing and then it’s gone away,” she said. “Meanwhile, the culture in the military hasn’t changed and the conduct has just grown worse. … It’s going to take more than words to fix this; it’s going to take action.”
