Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia provides direct representation to low-income clients in four substantive practice areas, and handles appeals on a broad range of poverty law issues through its nationally-recognized Barbara McDowell Appellate Advocacy Project. These practice areas include housing law, domestic violence/family law, public benefits law, and consumer law. Legal Aid’s assistance is free to those with little to no income, and they offer assistance regardless of immigration status. While you do not have to be a resident of the District of Columbia to get help, Legal Aid can only assist with legal problems that take place in the District.
