Brig. Gen. Jeff Sinclair to receive reprimand, $20K pay forfeiture

Sinclair’s court-martial came as Congress is considering significant changes to military law to address widespread reports of sexual assault and misconduct among the ranks. There is a perception that military commanders have been lenient to sex offenders. Some lawmakers have advanced legislation to take away commanders’ power to call for courts-martial and to give these decisions to professional prosecutors.

An advocacy organization that represents victims of sexual assault in the armed forces also derided the sentence.

“The military’s promises of ‘zero tolerance’ for sexual offenses continues to ring hollow as yet another high ranking official is let off the hook, and shows yet again why we need an independent and impartial military justice system,” said Nancy Parrish, president of the Protect Our Defenders organization.
