Editorial: Has justice prevailed?

The Watertown Daily Times Editorial Board writes:

It’s not likely that U.S. Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-N.Y., has made many friends among those in the upper echelons of the Pentagon.

She has worked to have sexual assault cases involving armed forces personnel handled by military litigators who are outside the chain of command. She believes commanding officers are too often tempted to sweep such charges under the rug, thus requiring the need for independent prosecutors.

The U.S. Senate last Thursday came up a few votes short of passing Sen. Gillibrand’s measure. The vote was 55-45 in favor, but it needed at least 60 affirmative votes to pass.
