More military sexual assault charges point toward a much larger problem

Barely over a month after an army general earned a reprimand over sexual assaults that happened under his watch as the commanding officer of US Army forces in Japan, an Army staff sergeant is facing accusations that he sexually assaulted women in Afghanistan and Missouri, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
The newspaper reported that accusations against Staff Sgt. Angel M. Sanchez are detailed in a charging document, and the charges could lead to a court martial. Sanchez appeared at a pre-trial hearing at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, where he has been training new soldiers in the 14th Military Police Brigade since August.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced a 50 percent spike in reports of sexual assault last year, but could not say whether that meant an increase in crimes being committed or simply an increase in reports filed. Military officials suggested the latter.
