Orange County Register: For Marine, sexual assault was career-killer
The Orange County Register reports:
Stacey Thompson, who joined the Marine Corps to be part of “The Few and the Proud,” plans to tell her personal story of military harassment and rape on Friday as part of an effort to change legislation on sexual assaults in the military.
Thompson, 32, of San Clemente, who is married to a Marine still based at Camp Pendleton, will join California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in a press conference in Los Angeles. Boxer is trying to draw attention to a bipartisan bill she has co-sponsored, which would ensure that prosecution of sexual assaults in the military are made by trained military prosecutors – not senior commanders.
“The epidemic of military sexual assault is a shame on our nation – and it’s been allowed to go on for decades,” Boxer said in a statement from her office. “It is long past time to say enough is enough, and stop these predators who prey on innocent women and men in our military.”
